Performed in Santee Alley, Los Angeles - Saturday June 16th, 2018

This performance was in support of rafa esparza’s project at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Entitled a la Calle (to the Street), the performance played off the title of esparza’s Project Room exhibition de la Calle (of the Street) that was on view from April 22 to July 15, 2018. Produced as a collaboration between various individual artists and collectives, the invited artists in a la Calle focused on creating work that could be worn or shown-off in the processional performance as a culmination of the first half of the project. The garments produced for the performance were later exhibited in the Project Room space till the end of the show’s run.

olivas’ performed in mop blue-collar  quinceañera dress, embracing the poetics of labor. It was the fantasy of it all, and it was the reality of the grueling work. As olivas hauled the 50+ lbs dress across six blocks, the corset in the bodice of the dress cutting into his ribs and the sun beating down his back, children yanked on their mother’s hands for a better look and everyone snapped pics.
